Its primary school offers a child-centred learning environment that aims to foster independent learning through discovery with a curriculum it claims is based on the latest guidelines for developmentally-appropriate practices.
Golden Gate American School
Golden Gate American School (GGAS) is a family-owned business that has operated for over 13 years. GGAS says it employs only qualified native English language teachers and currently has a roll of approximately 300.
It claims its high school diploma is valid in the USA through a fully accredited correspondence course which it says is recognized by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on International and Trans-regional Accreditation, and the Illinois State Board of Education. Moreover its Cambodian curriculum High School diploma from GGAS is fully accredited by the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport.
iCAN British International School
Since 2006 iCAN operates out of a 5000 square metre campus occupying a number of buildings in the heart of the city that includes purpose-built teaching and sports facilities. iCan claims its curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales, but is adapted to include an international perspective where appropriate. The school also emphasises traditional values.
The school’s youngest cohort (18 months-3 years) are housed at the PLAY Early Years Centre situated close to the main School campus. The Early Years Foundation Stage (age 3-5 years) also occupy their own unit on the campus.
Following rapid growth, iCAN has embarked on a development programme and now offers education up to and including Year 8.
iCAN current student base is 30% Cambodian, 14% American, 13% Australian, 8% Korean, 6% British, 4% Thai, 4% Japanese and 3% French. The School has two parallel classes for each year group.
International School of Phnom Penh
ISPP as it’s commonly known, is a private, non-profit coeducational English-language day school has been in existence for a remarkable 20 years. An International Baccalaureate (IB) School, it is externally authorized by the IB as well as by the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the US.
ISPP has also developed school-wide General Learning Targets (GLTs) to demonstrate to parents what its students are expected to know and be capable of achieving at each grade level.
Its programme covers Early Years to Grade 12: a Primary Years Programme (PYP) for Kindergarten through Grade 5; IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6 through 10; and the two-year, pre-college, IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12.
The school is located in central Phnom Penh on a rather crowded campus housed in slightly cramped buildings it inherited when it took over the site. There have been plans to move to a new purpose-build facility but so far this has failed to materialise.
Nevertheless the school has a strong community spirit and a generally supportive atmosphere for its charges. However an education there doesn’t come cheap.
Northbridge International School Cambodia
Northbridge (NISC) is authorized to offer all three programmes by International Baccalaureate (IB): the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). All of their teachers have certified teaching certificates and are trained in the PYP, MYP and DP methodologies.
NISC has also been fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges since 2001.
Part of the Northbridge residential complex, the school’s purpose-built and comparatively spacious facilities currently consist of six main buildings. The first is a three-story air-conditioned academic block, which includes the library, science labs, computer labs, eleven full-size classrooms and several smaller teaching spaces. Next the is a new Primary Years building that includes 16 full size classrooms, 5 language classrooms, 2 art classrooms, and a technology lab.
Then there is a six-classroom Early Childhood Center for Early Learning (ages 3 and 4), and a Kindergarten/Grade 1 (ages 5 and 6). There is also two air conditioned cafeteria that includes a full service kitchen and performance stage, plus a covered gymnasium with changing and shower rooms. There is also a 25-meter long by six-lane wide competition size swimming pool, tennis courts, and expansive grass playing fields.

Sambo’s Tots Playhouse & Playschool
Sambo’s Tots Playhouse and Playschool provides fun-filled “edutainment” experiences for babies and toddlers from 3 months to 6 years that support their development in life.
Their approach to early-years education uses a playgroup concept where every child is accompanied and supported by a parent or a caregiver. With the children, they sing, dance, create art, explore their environment, listen to stories and music, and exercise their bodies. After each session they provide a healthy snack for each child.

Hope International School
If you really want to protect your progeny from the evils of a secular education thereby ensuring they never question whether Jesus really did walk on water, then this could be the place for you and yours. Hope caters especially for the children of the numerous Christian soldiers marching as to war amidst the heathens here in Cambodia. The curriculum is based upon “clearly defined, progressive learning objectives” but these are imbued with a “biblical world view” (presumably, no mention of evolution). The school is accredited by the University of Cambridge International Examination Centre and offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and Advanced Subsidiary Level Qualifications (AS Level). Instruction is exclusively in the Lord’s English. Hope has a boarding facility.
Lycée Française René Descartes de Phnom Penh
The Lycéeis a semi-private school in the heart of Phnom Penh offering primary and secondary level education in French. Degrees offered include the Brevet des collèges and the Baccalauréat (S, ES and L depending on demand). Classes: from Petite Section (Maternelle) to Terminale (S, ES, L).
